THE SOLUTION

The fix is in the name.

Right now, Britain taxes a nurse's overtime harder than a billionaire's portfolio. We shift that. Tax assets at the very top, and cut the tax on ordinary wages. Reward the work. Stop rewarding the hoarding.

It sounds radical. It isn't.

We've done it before, and it built the best of this country.

After a war that nearly bankrupted us, Britain didn't shrink. It built.

The post war consensus, founded the NHS — free healthcare for everyone, paid for by all. We built millions of council homes. We laid the motorways, opened the universities, and created the welfare state from scratch. A country with far less money than we have today decided its wealth belonged to its people, and used it to build things we're still proud of eighty years later.

And it did all this in an era of high taxes on the very top. The two things happened together. When wealth was shared, Britain was a pioneer.

THE PRINCIPLE IS ALREADY BRITISH

Here's the part the "it'll never work" crowd would rather you didn't know.

Britain didn't import this idea. We invented it. As far back as 1907 — over a century ago — Asquith's government rewrote the income tax so that money earned through work was taxed more lightly than money that simply rolled in from investments.

Work taxed lighter, wealth taxed harder.

That principle didn't sit still — it was reshaped more than once, surviving in different forms right through to the 1970s, when a surcharge on investment income carried the same idea forward.

Did some of the very rich wriggle out regardless?

Of course — they always do. But that's an argument for plugging loopholes, not for abandoning the principle itself.
It was the 1980s that tore it up — top rates slashed, the surcharge scrapped, work and wealth put back on the same footing for the first time in generations.

"Tax wealth, not work" isn't a foreign idea, or a new one. It's a British instinct we abandoned forty years ago.

This is not about inventing something new. This is about remembering what we already did.

"But they'll just leave"

You've heard it a hundred times. Tax them and they'll flee to Dubai.

Two answers. First, you can't put a London townhouse on a plane. You can't move a Kensington flat, a Scottish estate, or take a slice of British land to Monaco. Tax the assets, and the wealth that is bolted to the ground, right here.

Second — let them leave. Just don't let them off. The United States taxes its citizens for life, wherever in the world they live. Move to Dubai, keep your US passport, and you still file with the taxman back home. We could write the same rule. The "I'll just leave" threat only works because we let it. Change the law, and it doesn't.

"IT'S TOO COMPLICATED"

It's harder than income tax. That's true. But don’t let "hard" become a convenient excuse to never try.

We value property every day — for rent, for stamp duty, for mortgages. Insurance companies value art based on ‘Market Value’. Rich people borrow from lenders based on the value of their portfolio. Other countries run wealth taxes now. The complexity is real, AND it's solvable. "It's complicated" is what you say when you'd rather not do a thing — not when you can't.

"IT'LL KILL INVESTMENT"

Look around. Is the current system delivering roaring, productive investment? Or is it pouring money into a thirtieth home and a bigger share portfolio while wages flatline and the high street empties?

Money hoarded at the top isn't building factories. It's inflating the price of the house you're trying to buy. Move it, and it starts working for the whole economy again — the way middle-class spending always has.
